Spring, TX - A business owner surveyed the damage at his gun store Monday morning after thieves used a backhoe to break into his store in Old Town Spring. The burglary was reported at Warthog Firearms at 406 Maine at Prairie about 2:50 a.m. Monday. "They took one rifle, but it was a non-working rifle at the time," said owner Joe Bargas. "All the good guns and everything else were locked up in the safe. They did all this damage for almost nothing." Police said a masked man drove the backhoe into the store. Surveillance video shows one of the thieves sitting in the backhoe and ramming the machine into the store. He then climbs through the rubble and into the store. The thief grabs a rifle and tries to break the display cases to get to the items inside, but is unsuccessful. Instead, he takes the rifle and climbs back out of the store. Deputies said a second person was waiting in a getaway pickup truck and as soon as the burglar got into the vehicle, he drove away. Bargas said he's not surprised that the thieves needed to use so much force to get into his store. "We've tried to do our due diligence to make it theft-proof, but when you have to use a backhoe to get in, we must have done something right," he said. He said he is not going to let the setback slow down his store. "The owner of the building has the insurance. We'll get in touch with her this morning and have the insurance guys come out and we'll take this back to where this was a few months ago," Bargas said. "We have a lot of good customers who expect to see us so we'll be back." Source: click2houston
