As well as reaching out to those Scots who oppose a second independence referendum she sent a defiant message to British Prime Minister Theresa May:"To stand in defiance of that would be for the prime minister to shatter beyond repair any notion of the UK as a respectful partnership of equals. If her concern is timing then within reason I am happy to have that discussion. But let the prime minister be in no doubt, the will of our parliament must and will prevail."
Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has joined the fray calling for a third way for Scotland.

He propsed a federal system for the UK with Scotland taking control of fisheries, farming, welfare and taxation after Brexit:"It would mean we repatriated powers that will come from the European Union which sadly the government and the referendum has decided that we will exit, but repatriate these powers in the main not to Westminster or Whitehall, but repatriate these powers to Scotland, its parliament, Wales, its assembly, Northern Ireland, its assembly, and to the English regions."
