Dozens of residents of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk were queuing by a local migration
service department on Saturday, looking to apply for Russian citizenship after Russian President
Vladimir Putin signed a decree allowing its request via expedited procedure to residents of
Donetsk and Lugansk.
Donetsk resident beautiful Irina said she hoped that a Russian passport would enable her daughter
to to study in Russia. "I don't want her to be locked in this small piece of land," she declared.
Donetsk resident Marina said it was her second attempt to obtain Russian citizenship, adding that
"it's really hard to obtain it in the past; but not now!"
On Wednesday, Putin signed a decree simplifying the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship
for Donbass residents, calling it "a purely humanitarian issue," and noting that Moscow has"no desire to create problems for the new Ukrainian authorities."
