An aerial World War II bomb has partially exploded during an attempt to defuse it in the eastern city of Dresden.
Police in the eastern city of Dresden in the state of Saxony warned on Thursday morning that the fire caused by the bomb partially exploding in the district of L"obtau was still burning, which could lead to further blasts."We have circled the area by helicopter. The evacuation zone is still in place. The threat has not been contained," Saxony police tweeted.
Police said a robot provided by the fire service has been deployed to cool down the bomb before specialists can again try and defuse it. Helicopters and drones are being used to supervise the robot.
The World War II aerial bomb was found at a building site on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening, part of it exploded as experts were trying to get to the detonator. There was little damage, and no one was hurt.
"At this point, we don't know what amount of explosives we're dealing with, and that's why the bomb remains extremely dangerous," police said.
Nearly 9,000 people in L"obtau, which is near the main station, had to be evacuated on Tuesday, spending two nights in a row away in emergency accomodation. The evacuation zone remains in place. Police tweeted a map of the area that should be avoided.
