Taiwan Renews Pledge to Buy US Wheat

Over the past week delegates from Taiwan have visited Washington DC, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota to sign a pledge committing to continue their wheat purchases from the US for another two years. Taiwanese millers will import 1.8 million metric tons of US wheat over the course of 2018 and 2019. The deal will bring an estimated $576 million dollars to the agricultural sector of the three US States and marks an increase from Taiwan's previous 2-year deal of 1.7 million metric tons. Taiwan presents a unique market for US grain producers; Taiwan is the only Asian nation whose populace consumes more wheat than it does rice. Approximately 80% of the wheat Taiwan imports comes from the USA. The superior quality of US soft-white wheat is desirable to Taiwanese consumers who use it for products such as cookies, crackers, bunch cakes, and noodles. Taiwan also imports US hard-red wheat
