With what the opposition is calling the "mother of all protests" called for today the Venezuelan government has met in crisis as the latest wave of public unrest escalates.
President Nicolas Maduro has gathered his government and generals, signing into law a police and military security plan and blaming Washington and the main opposition party for the unrest.
"All military police and civil structures of the state of Venezuela are activated in Plan Zamora which, in the initial Green phase will defend internal order and defend peace, and defeat the coup called by Washington and by the National Assembly President Julio Borges. I sign this document so this is immediately fulfilled," he said.
These protests are the largest since 2013, but the economy is also that much worse.
Borges is part of Justice First, the leading opposition party. Leader Henrique Capriles may have recently been barred from taking office, but he is leading the pushback on the streets, insisting the Socialist government is in its "final phase".
The last three weeks of protest have cost five dead, more than 100 injured, and 500 arrested say various human rights groups.
